Veteran Application
Honor Flight Maine is profoundly honored to recognize and
celebrate the service of all Maine veterans who answered the call of duty
between December 7, 1941, and May 8, 1975—a period that encompassed World War
II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the tense years of the Cold War. From
those who fought tyranny on distant battlefields, to those who stood vigilant
in defense of freedom during the ideological struggle of the Cold War, your
courage, sacrifice, and steadfast devotion helped secure the liberties that
define the United States of America. It is our privilege to offer each eligible
veteran the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC, to tour, experience,
and reflect at the national memorials built in their honor.
Eligibility is determined by one simple question: “Did
you serve?” We do not require a DD-214, as we respect the sensitive nature
of that document. No matter the branch, rank, length of duty, or whether that
service took place stateside, overseas, or in combat, every qualifying veteran
is welcomed with pride and gratitude.
To ensure fairness and uphold the long-standing tradition of
honoring those who served before us, veterans are selected for upcoming flights
by age, beginning with the eldest. The only exception applies to veterans
facing life-limiting illnesses and whose medical provider has indicated they likely
have less than a year to live. These courageous individuals are given priority
for the next available trip.
Each veteran will journey to Washington, DC, accompanied by
a guardian (escort). Guardians are most often adult children, grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, or close friends and cannot be the veteran’s spouse,
partner, or significant other. Please note that a veteran cannot be scheduled
for a flight until the guardian’s application has been received.
Honor Flight Maine regards this mission as a solemn duty and
a patriotic promise—a promise to ensure that the stories, sacrifices, and
service of America’s heroes are never forgotten. Through this experience, we
seek not only to express our nation’s gratitude, but to preserve the history
you helped shape, and to ensure that your legacy continues to inspire future
generations of Americans.
