Honor Flight would not be successful without the generous support of our guardians. Guardians play a significant role on every trip, ensuring that every veteran has a safe and memorable experience.
Please note: Many of our Veterans choose a family member to be their Guardian and share their Honor Flight Maine experience with them. Therefore, our need to "assign" a Guardian is very rare. Our waiting list is extensive. Our need for male Guardians and those individuals with medical training are especially needed given the age of the Veterans we are escorting. Safety is paramount at all times!
Guardians MUST be 2nd Generation or younger and able-bodied. Spouses may NOT serve as Guardians.
The primary responsibility of a Guardian is the physical safety and security of one or more Veterans - helping up and down steps, off buses, wheeling Veterans up and down ramps, and physically handling equipment and baggage. This is a physical, working trip for Guardians. Mature teens, adults and 'sturdy' retirees are welcomed to serve as guardians. Guardian applications must be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to flight and should be submitted at the same time Veterans apply to go.
Guardians must be of able mind and body, physically able to push a wheelchair Veteran (up to 200 lbs.) a distance of approx.
4 miles, lift 100 pounds waist high, 50 lbs. shoulder high and 25 lbs. above the shoulders.
Guardians are asked to make a tax deductible donation to Honor Flight Maine in the amount of $500 to cover travel expenses for the trip.
